--1100 hours, Saturday morning, this fourteenth day of February of the year 2004, wind of 10 knots (kts), South South West (SSW), backing to WNW 20 kts, gusting to 40, ‘HEART’ clears the Golden Gate, clawing NNW along the California coast from Bonita Point to Drakes Bay where a protected anchorage is to be found in westerly weather.
--The plan is to assess HEART’s founding, reconsider the plan and, weather or no, embark on a sailing course for the Hawaiian Islands as the first waypoint of a voyage of discovery and investigation into the North West Pacific Ocean.
--1720, made good anchorage in Drakes’s Bay on sand and rock bottom in 40 feet, leaving the better holding for the fishing fleet coming late. 44 pound Bruce anchor with 40 feet of 3/8 inch chain and 100 feet rode with a spare 33 pound Danforth should keep HEART secure for the night, with anchor watch every 3 hours and a one-eye-opened captain.
--‘HEART’ is a sweet ship, 35 feet long, 10.5 of beam, draft of 5.5 feet, with a robust 38 foot mast stepped on deck but supported by a compression-post off the keel, stayed with 5/16 in.-12 strand Stainless Steel fore and aft, port and starboard, fore and aft lowers, with an optional 3/16 in. cutter stay imbedded in the staysail luff.
--Sail inventory includes a 400 square foot main with 2 divisional reefs, a 100 sq. ft. cutter staysail, a 110% working jib, a 300 sq. ft. Genoa and an 85 sq. ft. trysail. I’ll consider rigging a mizzen mast and 85 sq. ft. spanker upon reaching Hawaii, if HEART’s performance warrants a change to a “ketch” configuration. The most recent upgrade is the new 22 hp Yanmar diesel that List Marine installed in June of 2003. A fine, dependable engine that I’ll run for half of an hour a day for flushing the bilge and more if cloudy conditions prevent battery charging by the stern panels of solar cells.
